The core of Refuge Brewery's operation is a trio of Ss brewhouses. A large brewery is one that produces 60,000 barrels or more per year, and a small brewery, less than 60,000 barrels. On any given day you can see dozens of prototype Ss equipment being tested by the Refuge Brew Crew. Owning Refuge, an independent craft brewery, allows the team at Ss Brewtech to test and prototype on a level not seen in the industry before.

Today Ss Brewtech is the leader in Stainless Steel home brewing equipment, and is making huge waves in the pro brewing world by building pilot systems for some of the most well known and respected breweries around the world. Curt, being a mechanical engineer for the better part of four decades knew he could reshape the industry. For years the equipment that home brewers, and in turn pro brewers, were using was sub par. Three short months after opening the doors to Refuge, the Co-Founders decided to team up with a long term business partner and friend to pursue another passion, brewing equipment design. In 2021 Karl Strauss became the primary distribution partner for Refuge Brewery, and is currently slinging Refuge beers throughout Southern California. That same year we leased the suite next door (11,000 sqft total) to take the brewery to the next level. Discover Humboldt Regeneration Brewery & Farm, a nano-brewery in McKinleyville California on the North coast of Humboldt county. In 2016, Refuge became the largest brewery in Temecula and all of Riverside county. In 2015, we became the fastest growing production brewery in California with nearly a 300% jump in production over the previous year. Currently Refuge beer (primarily Blood Orange Wit) is sold in over a thousand restaurants and bars throughout Southern California. In the coming years we begun to distribute our beers throughout California. Annual production has ranged around 200 million barrels2 for most of the 1990s. In addition to Bud Light, these are the biggest beer brands in America. Production peaked in 1990, in part due to changes in tax regulations that took effect in 1991, adding an excise tax on brewery products. State Craft Beer Sales & Production Statistics, 2022. This would ultimately be the starting groundwork for what would become Ss Brewtech the following year. More than 29 million barrels of the country’s single best-selling beer, Anheuser-Busch’s Bud Light, were shipped in 2018. We had a stubbornness to build everything our self and this mindset went all the way to Curt designing his own brewing equipment. Throughout the year, there were 716 new brewery openings and 346 closings. It took months of long nights and hard work to build the brewery (originally just the suite that is now the tap room), but in December 2012 we officially opened our doors. The number of operating craft breweries continued to climb in 2020, reaching an all-time high of 8,764, including 1,854 microbreweries, 3,219 brewpubs, 3,471 taproom breweries, and 220 regional craft breweries.

The result is a brewery full of unique beer, brewed without traditional rules, and often using fresh seasonal ingredients.

There is clearly plenty of room for craft beer to grow in the Golden State.We came up with the notion of opening a brewery while homebrewing one Saturday morning in Curt's garage. With some quick bar napkin math, the total per-capita consumption of craft beer in Oregon comes out to about 100 pints in 2014, while in California that number is only about 13 pints per person. Northerly neighbor Oregon produced 1.6 million barrels in 2014 - half as much as California, but Oregon’s population is only a tenth of California’s. But a little perspective is important: Though 3.4 million barrels is far and away the most craft beer produced by any state, California also has a huge population. One figure that stands out is the total production from all 500-plus craft breweries in the state in 2014: 3.4 million barrels of beer (that’s over 100 million gallons). However, the impressive expansion of California’s craft brewing industry may be just a beginning. The predictions of a craft beer bust are not new, and they’re regularly dredged up every few months in one publication or another. It’s enough to make even the most bullish craft fan start to worry about a bubble bursting for the industry.
